Questions

Do I need editing software to clip?

No. Cropping, trimming and captions are all a phone app can do. What you actually need, which free tools cover it, and when a desktop editor starts to matter.

Short answer

No. A clip needs four edits: trim to the moment, crop to vertical, add captions, export. CapCut on a phone does all four for free. A desktop editor only matters once you are posting many clips a day and want to go faster.

No. Clipping needs less editing than people expect.

The four edits every clip needs

  1. 1Trim to the moment. In at the strongest line, out one second after the last good one.
  2. 2Crop to 9:16, the vertical frame. Keep the speaker's face in the middle.
  3. 3Captions. Auto generated, then fixed by hand where the words are wrong.
  4. 4Export a clean file with no watermark.

For most clips that is all the editing there is. Anything else (a title card on the first frame, a zoom on a reaction, a sound effect) is a bonus.

Free tools that do all four

  • CapCut on iPhone or Android. Auto captions are good, cropping is one tap, and it exports clean. Most clippers start here and a lot never leave.
  • The built in editors on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. Fine for trimming and captions. Weaker at cropping a wide video, and clips edited inside one app have to be exported again for the others.
  • CapCut desktop or DaVinci Resolve on a computer, both free. Faster once you are cutting a lot from one long file, because you can mark all the moments and export them in one go.

When a desktop editor starts to pay off

At three or four clips a day, a phone is fine. At ten a day across two campaigns, a computer with the source file open and keyboard shortcuts for cut and export saves an hour a day. That is the point where it is worth learning one.

What matters more than the software

The moment you picked and the first line on screen. A perfectly graded clip of a boring moment gets 300 views. A rough crop of the best line of the episode gets 300,000. Spend your time on the source video, not on the effects panel.

What the campaign needs from the file

Post it from your own account and paste the link. The platform reads the view count from the app, so the file itself just needs to be watchable, vertical and free of another app's watermark. Read the campaign brief for anything specific, like a logo that has to stay on screen.
