What is clipping?

Clipping means cutting short moments out of longer videos and posting them as vertical clips. Here is how it works and why brands pay for it.

Short answer

Clipping is taking a long video (a podcast, a stream, an interview, a product demo) and cutting the best 15 to 60 seconds out of it to post on TikTok, Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts. Brands and creators pay clippers for the views those short clips get.

Clipping is the job of watching long videos and pulling the best short moments out of them. A three hour podcast has maybe ten moments that would stop someone scrolling. A clipper finds those ten moments, crops them to a vertical frame, adds captions, and posts them as short clips.

The clips go on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, because that is where short vertical video gets the most views.

Who pays for clips

Two groups pay for clipping.

The first is creators and podcasters who make long content. They do not have time to cut 40 clips a week, so they pay other people to do it. Every clip that does well brings new people to the main channel.

The second is brands. A brand that launched a product wants it seen by a million people this month. Instead of paying one big account a flat fee and hoping, the brand puts money in a campaign pool and pays every clipper a set rate for the views they bring in. On The Creators Club that rate is written on the campaign card as dollars per 1,000 views.

What a clipper actually does

A normal day of clipping looks like this:

  1. 1Open the campaign and download the source footage the brand gave you.
  2. 2Watch it at 1.5x speed and note the timestamps of anything funny, surprising or useful.
  3. 3Cut a 20 to 45 second clip around each moment. Start on the strongest line, not on the intro.
  4. 4Crop it to 9:16, add captions, maybe a title card on the first frame.
  5. 5Post it from your own account and paste the link into the campaign.

That last step is the part that turns it into money. Once the link is in, the platform reads the view count from TikTok, Instagram or YouTube and turns it into earnings at the campaign rate.

Why it grew so fast

Short vertical video is where attention went. A 30 second clip with a good first line can get 500,000 views from an account with 200 followers, because the apps show clips to people who do not follow you. Brands noticed that ten clippers posting 100 clips reach more people than one sponsored post, and they cost less per view.

Do you need to be a video editor

No. You need to be good at spotting moments and writing the first line of a caption. The editing itself is cropping, captions and trimming, which any phone app can do. Read do I need editing software to clip if that is the part you are unsure about.

If you want to try it, The Creators Club lists live campaigns with the rate, the platforms and how much budget is left. You pick one, post clips, and the views turn into a balance you can withdraw.
